compete for the title of The Flash, reading your own original fiction —
which must tell a complete tale within a 3-minute period. Our expert
panel of judges will score your work, and you automatically lose 10
percent for going over your 3-minute time. You may only read your own
work. The reader with the top score wins!
Sign up before the con by sending an
email to program@boskone.org for one of eight (8) reading slots on a
first-come, first-served basis. Or sign up onsite at Program Ops in the
Harbor Foyer for one of three (3) at-con openings. A waiting list will
also be available.

Broad Universe Reading at Readercon 28
I'll be reading at Readercon with other members of Broad Universe, an international organization dedicated to promoting, encouraging, honoring, and celebrating women writers and editors in science fiction, fantasy, horror, and other speculative genres.If you've never been to a Rapid-Fire Reading, give it a try. They're a lot of fun, yet sometimes very sobering and thought-provoking as well. You might hear stories of horror, fantasy, or science fiction -- or a delightful combination of all of the above.

Five Authors. One event.

Join five local authors for fun and food, readings and refreshments, prizes and pretties, cookies and chocolate, and books, all at the beautiful Some Enchanted Evening shop in Spencer, Massachusetts.
Join us for a few hours of exciting readings, Q & A, and schmoozing with the authors.We've been working hard to put together creative raffle baskets with different themes: Celtic myth, dragon, vampires, and fairies, and everyone attending has a chance at winning.
Who are we?
Becca Boucher was born in Worcester, Massachusetts and remains a lifelong New England resident, which can be seen in the settings of her novels. Her first published work appeared in the Write More Publications anthology Novel Hearts (2013), which was followed by her novel Hunting The Moon in the fall of 2013. Hunting The Moon is the first in a three book paranormal romance series set in central Massachusetts. The second book, Midnight Raven, debuted in May 2015. Both books follow two women as they navigate a chilling Celtic curse, and a vengeful fairy. Besides paranormal romance, Ms. Boucher writes military fiction. Her short stories "Panel 35" and "The Shadow Soldier" are now available in a special print edition. Ms. Boucher is a freelance blogger and writer, and mom to two wonderful sons.
Diane Haynes grew up drawing and painting. Writing was relegated to daily reports written while working with disabled adults. Although she’s written at least a dozen short stories over the years, most were quickly relegated to notebooks in a drawer. Her series The Enchanted Forest, which featured YA Fantasy/Romance, Rift Healer, Sirocco, and Still Hunt, were published by Crescent Moon Press in 2012-2014. Diane lives in Central MA where she and her husband care for their rescued Basset Hounds, Ruby and Boris, whose sad pasts do nothing to diminish their willingness to be naughty. Jennifer Allis Provost writes books about faeries, orcs and elves. Zombies, too. She grew up in the wilds of Western Massachusetts and had read every book in the local library by age twelve. (It was a small library). An early love of mythology and folklore led to her epic fantasy series, The Chronicles of Parthalan, and her day job as a cubicle monkey helped shape her urban fantasy, Copper Girl. She spends her days drinking vast amounts of coffee, arguing with her computer, and avoiding any and all domestic behavior. Connect with Jenn online at www.authorjenniferallisprovost.com.
Morven Westfield is a fiction writer who lives in Central Massachusetts. The author of a two-book series in which a coven of witches investigate evil in the form of vampires, she regularly contributes non-fiction articles on folklore and the supernatural to The Witches Almanac. Under her full name, Trisha J. Wooldridge writes grown-up horror short stories and weird poetry for anthologies and magazines that occasionally win awards. In her child-friendly persona of T.J. Reading at 9Pi-Con
Broad Universe, a nonprofit international organization of women and men dedicated to celebrating and promoting the work of women writers of science fiction, fantasy and horror, will be hosting one of their Rapid Fire Readings at the last Pi-Con at noon on Saturday, August 1, 2015.
A Rapid Fire Reading is group reading at a convention (or other venue) where a writer reads a five-minute snippet of her work as part of a group of other Level 1 Broad Universe members. You get to hear a variety of different genres and styles and have a chance to win a giveaway. It's a lot of fun.
Each reader reads for 5 minutes. I'll be reading from a short story that will be published this fall.

Short Story to be Published in Whittier Anthology
I took my inspiration for "The Fortune Teller" from the poem Moll Pitcher, a 900-line poem Whittier wrote about a clairvoyant and fortune-teller from Lynn, Massachusetts. Born Mary Diamond around 1736, she was known for her accurate predictions, especially those concerning voyages by ship. A quote from Whittier's poem now adorns her gravestone in the West Lynn Burial Ground.
The book's official release will be Saturday September 26 at the Whittier Birthplace in Haverhill, MA from 1 PM to 3 PM.Haverhill is celebrating its 375th anniversary this year, so it should be an exciting book launch. More on this as it becomes available.

Celebrating Women Genre Authors in the Classroom
Annie’s Book Stop of Worcester is holding a celebration of teachers the second week in March, 2013. Celtic Mythology and Its Influence on Fiction
Looking for a different way to celebrate St. Patrick's Day this year? How about attending a panel discussion where two New England authors discuss Celtic mythology and its influence on fiction.
"If you like stories featuring Druids, fairies, banshees, leprechauns, pookas, or silkies, then you won't want to miss this one!" says author Terri Bruce, who has always been fascinated with the origins of myths and legends, especially those featuring the afterlife or King Arthur. Her Paranormal/Contemporary Fantasy series, Afterlife, draws heavily on Celtic burial and afterlife beliefs and features pookas, hobs/brownies, banshees, and various other folklore creatures.
She'll be joined by author Helen Collins, who has a long-standing love of myth and legends, which she has formally studied. Helen has been on archeological trips through remote regions of Ireland and is the author of several science fiction novels, including Mutagenesis and Neurogenesis.

Once again, an impending storm has interfered with our plans for a fantastic panel at Annie's Book Stop in Worcester scheduled for February 23, from 4-7 pm.
From the Annie's Book Stop in Worcester Facebook page comes this announcement:
Stay tuned for the rescheduling of The Event that Winter Tried to Stop! (Hey, three time's the charm, right?) Watch the Annie's Book Stop web page and Facebook page for details.
By the way, the bookstore WILL be open. The decision to cancel was based on the fact that some of the authors and attendees might be traveling from areas that will get the storm earlier than Worcester.

Here's the announcement about the panel taking place at Annie's Bookstop, Worcester, the "little bookstore that is bigger on the inside." (Dr. Who fans will get that allusion.)
"Just in time to celebrate Parentalia (February 13th – 21st), an ancient Roman festival commemorating the dead, join four New England authors for an informative and fun panel discussion on the challenges and opportunities of writing about ghosts—both real and imagined, the dead, and the afterlife. The authors will share their differing approaches to writing about the subject matter as well as their knowledge of various beliefs, myths, and customs ranging from the lighthearted to the downright scary, from real-life encounters to those that are completely fictitious. The presentation will be followed by a book signing. Copies of the authors’ books will be available to purchase."
Terri Bruce (terribruce.net) writes science fiction and fantasy stories from a haunted house in New Hampshire. Her debut novel, Hereafter, is about a woman stuck on earth as a ghost, searching for a way to cross over to the afterlife.
Jennifer Pelland (jenniferpelland.com) is a Nebula-nominated writer of speculative fiction. Her work includes a "Sacrifice," a short story about dying, and "Ghosts of New York," a short story about the afterlife.
Kristi Petersen Schoonover (kristipetersenschoonover.com) is a Connecticut-based author of horror and dark fiction. Her works includes Skeletons in the Swimmin’ Hole: Tales from Haunted Disney World, a collection of ghost stories set in Disney Parks.
Morven Westfield (morvenwestfield.com) is the author of dark fantasy and horror stories featuring vampires and witches. Her work includes Darksome Thirst, a story combining vampires, Wiccans, and computers, and its sequel, The Old Power Returns.

Jennifer Pelland (jenniferpelland.com) is a Nebula-nominated writer of speculative fiction. Her work includes a "Sacrifice," a short story about dying, and "Ghosts of New York," a short story about the afterlife.
Kristi Petersen Schoonover (kristipetersenschoonover.com) is a Connecticut-based author of horror and dark fiction. Her works includes Skeletons in the Swimmin’ Hole: Tales from Haunted Disney World, a collection of ghost stories set in Disney Parks.
Morven Westfield (morvenwestfield.com) is the author of dark fantasy and horror stories featuring vampires and witches. Her work includes Darksome Thirst, a story combining vampires, Wiccans, and computers, and its sequel, The Old Power Returns.

We'll be enjoying the outdoors at this fundraiser for the Foxboro Jaycees, which is free and open to the public. Current weather predictions are for a sunny day with temperatures in the mid-70s. If you're in the area, stop by. We'll have books for sale, and plenty of smiles for everyone.

Appearing at Heritage Craft Fair in Framingham
On Saturday, March 24, 2012, I'll be at the New England Horror Writers' table at the 39th Heritage Craft Fair in Framingham, MA. Along with me will be other NEHW writers including Stacey Longo, David Price, Kristi Petersen Schoonover, Rob Watts, and K. Allen Wood.
This is pretty exciting for me. I know where it is (no GPS needed this time!) and I know where it is because not only did I grow up in Framingham, but the town, which I renamed Danforth, figures highly in both my novels.
The first novel, Darksome Thirst, starts in Framingham when a lone second-shift computer operator, Alicia Anderson, meets a vampire in the computer room. Yes, the witches who sense the vampire at the same time are in Bristleton (Brighton) and some later are in Fenmore (Boston), but the heart and soul of both Darksome Thirst and the standalone sequel, The Old Power Returns, is in Framingham.
Stop by if you can. It's a fundraiser for the Heritage Chorale, admission is cheap, there will be food for sale, and parking is free.

Broad Universe Annual Meeting
I'm a member of Broad Universe, a nonprofit international organization of women and men dedicated to celebrating and promoting the work of women writers of science fiction, fantasy and horror.
Over the last couple of weeks, I've been busy helping them launch their first ever virtual annual meeting. Prior to 2011, Broad Universe held its annual meeting at WisCon, a feminist science fiction convention held in Madison, Wisconsin. Broad Universe is moving it to a virtual location to make it possible for more members to attend.
As a member of the Motherboard, I'll be speaking briefly, but mostly I'll be the "woman behind the curtains", trying to prevent problems and solve them as they arrive.
Here's the announcement.
Broad Universe will have an open annual meeting on August 14, 2011, at 7pm Eastern Time (US/Canada). This will be different from previous annual meetings in that it will be virtual -- that is, a large-scale conference call and web presentation.
New president Trisha Wooldridge will chair the meeting, which starts with a message from our outgoing president, Phoebe Wray. Other members of the Motherboard will describe what we've been doing this past year, and all will talk about our plans for the future. At the end, we'll answer questions that have been submitted.

The meeting will be recorded so that those who can't attend will be able to listen later.

Using Local Settings in Works of Horror
I will be joining authors Daniel G. Keohane (Solomon's Grave) and Tracy Carbone (The Man of Mystery Hill) for a reading, signing, anda panel discussion on using local settings in their works of horror. (My novels are set in a thinly-disguised Framingham, Boston, and Brighton, Massachusetts.)
